Center for Intercultural Communication, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

Centre for Intercultural Communication of is a research centre at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Kyiv, Ukraine).
The Centre’s major objective is to promote values of intercultural dialogue and diversity in Ukraine. The institution works in the following fields:
1)       academic translation;
2)       research projects related to translation and inter-lingual communication;
3)       education, especially projects related to academic exchanges and Ukraine’s integration into Bologna process;
4)       intercultural dialogue in literature, literary studies and humanities;
5)       intercultural dialogue in visual arts (painting, cinema).  
 
All projects of the centre are implemented jointly with the Ukrainian youth NGO Youth Humanities Centre, a legal person and non-for-profit non-governmental organization, affiliated with the Centre (founded in 2000).
 
 
Brief overview of the Centre’s initiatives
 
 
A. Implemented projects
 
A.1. Laboratory for Academic Translation
 
Since 2002 the Centre for Intercultural Communication has implemented Ukrainian Laboratory for Academic Translation. The Laboratory is an interactive forum aimed to promote open discussions of Ukrainian academic translations. The project pursues its activities due to financial and resource support of International Renaissance Foundation and National University of Kiev-Mohyla Academy.
Project's primary aim is to improve the quality of academic texts translated in Ukrainian before their publication. For this purpose the Laboratory organized more than 100 textological and terminological workshops involving experts in different fields. In this way the initiative promoted high level of examination of lexical and grammatical decisions made during the work on a particular text or terminological field.
 
 
A.2. Laboratory for Academic Translation of EU terminology (English-French-German-Ukrainian Dictionary of EU terminology)
In 2005 the centre launched a subsidiary of Laboratory for Academic Translation, focused on European Union terminology.
In the frameworks of this sub-project the Centre held 15 terminological workshops involving best Ukrainian experts in EU terminology, as well as translators and linguists. As a result, the Centre created a 4-lingual English-German-French-Ukrainian Dictionary of EU terminology.
The Dictionary was published (Slovnyk terminologiji Evropejskoho Sojuzu, Kyiv, K.I.S., 2007) and also posted online (http://www.ua-pereklad.org/ua/news/EUexperts)
The Centre intends to continue terminological and interlingual projects and prepare similar dictionaries in different fields of social sciences and humanities.
 
 
A.3. European Education Portal in Ukraine
 
News-and-analysis web-site European Education Portal in Ukraine (www.eu-edu.org), launched in May 2008, provides practical and advisory information for students, academics, researchers, university staff, and policy-makers, related to Ukraine’s integration with Europe’s education area. The project’s main idea main idea is to raise awareness of Ukrainian students, academics and public officials of the nature of today’s educational Europe and of its major opportunities and trends.
The web-site is a hub of information about learning opportunities in Europe, Ukraine’s integration with the European Higher Education Area, and harmonization of Ukraine’s education trends with basic principles of European education policy (quality assurance, transparency, autonomy of universities, mobility, education-industry links, credit transfer etc).
 
 
A.4. Why Do We Speak Like That. Language Changes in the Transition period.
 
The project is implemented by the Centre in cooperation with the Next Page Foundation (Sophia, Bulgaria), under support of the Erste Stiftung.
The project’s overarching goal is to document and research a significant process of cultural transfer via translation that took place over the last 17 years in three countries – Bulgaria, Serbia and Ukraine.
12 research texts will be prepared within the project, which will trace how translations in different fields influenced transformation of national languages in Bulgaria, Serbia and Ukraine in the last decades.
Opening-up of the former socialist societies brought into the public language hundreds of previously unknown concepts and ideas as well as the words for them. Translation (or adaptation) thus was vital in the 90s and indirectly played a role in the way people were thinking about the societies they live in. The project tries to answer the question of how did transitional societies handle such rapid linguistic transformation and what are its main features.
In Ukraine the project team intends to prepare 5 papers (all of them in Ukrainian and English/German)
 
 
A.5. GUAM intercultural painting exhibition
Besides multilingual, translation and education projects, the Centre is also active in the field of visual arts.
On 7-9 December, 2007, at Kyivska Fortetsia (Kyiv Fortress) it organized a intercultural exhibition of Georgian, Ukrainian, Azeri and Moldovan painters, to celebrate launch of International Foundation to Develop GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova).
Vakhtang Kebuladze, a manager of the Centre, has also organized a number of independent visual art events in Kyiv.
